Then it meandered through town all day and came back by the house at 1:30 at night. That means they were carrying this thing all day long. But not the same people the whole time. Lent in Antigua, Guatemala, March 24, 2013. A man peppers yellow tinted saw dust onto sand as a foundation for an alfombra (carpet) for processioners to walk over. Some carpets take 10-12 hours to make while others may only take a few hours. It all depends on what you want to make and how much effort you can put into it. Photo by Scott Umstattd

March 17, 2013, a couple of tough looking hombres lay down some pretty colors as they make a carpet for a procession to walk over later in the day. With pre-cut templates, these guys made flowers and other swirly designs out of tinted saw dust and sand. Then, later in the day, a bunch of people walked over it and destroyed it.
